Targeting The Young

WHO estimates that 37 million children aged 13 to 15 are using tobacco products worldwide. In some countries, the prevalence of e-cigarette use among teenagers significantly exceeds that of adults. In Europe, 20% of surveyed 15-year-olds reported using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days.

Despite progress in reducing traditional tobacco use, emerging products like e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches pose new threats to youth health. Studies indicate that e-cigarette use nearly triples the likelihood of traditional cigarette consumption among non-smoking young people.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, stated: "These industries use candy-flavored traps to package nicotine and specifically target schools and young people." WHO recommends measures such as banning flavored e-cigarettes, increasing taxes, and amplifying educational campaigns to combat this trend.

Youth leaders worldwide are resisting the manipulative marketing of the tobacco industry through education and advocacy. They are calling on policymakers to shield the younger generation from tobacco and nicotine harm and are striving to build a smoke-free future.

Through the combined efforts of governments, public health organizations, civil society, and empowered youth, a future free from tobacco and nicotine harm is achievable.
